Mitigating Insurance Risk: A Board Education Session
Effective community governance includes understanding and managing risk. This educational session is designed to help condominium board members and community leaders better understand common insurance exposures and how proactive planning can help reduce claims and support long-term financial stability.
Topics will include:
· Deductibles and their role in association budgeting
· Maintenance versus insurable losses
· Roofing considerations and insurance implications
· Ponds, water features, and appropriate signage
· Risk transfer through contracts, hold harmless provisions, and additional insured requirements
· The role of reserve studies in supporting insurance and capital planning
This session is intended to provide practical guidance and general education to support informed board decision-making. It does not replace legal, accounting, or engineering advice.
About the Speakers
Erica Joyce, CIC, CIRMS, AAI, AIS
Erica brings more than 16 years of experience to Mid-State Insurance, with a strong background in Commercial Property and Casualty. She supports Mid-State Insurance’s mission of providing comprehensive insurance solutions by focusing on each client’s specific industry needs and working closely with them to identify effective and affordable coverage options.
Erica has served as a board member for the past six years and is currently the President of the CAI Wisconsin Chapter. In addition to her other professional designations, she has earned the CIRMS (Community Insurance and Risk Management Specialist) designation and is the only CIRMS designee in the State of Wisconsin.
Ryan Maloney
Ryan Maloney is a Vice President & Agent with Robertson Ryan & Associates; Largest Area Independent Insurance Agency (Milwaukee Business Journal), and 48th Largest Property/Casualty Agency Nationally (Insurance Journal). Ryan is a graduate of Marquette University and began is insurance career with Badger Mutual Insurance Company in 2008, eventually joining Robertson Ryan and Associates in 2014. Ryan served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Chapter of the Community Associations Institute, which is a multi-disciplinary non-profit alliance serving all stakeholders in community associations, and on their Education Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose International, which is a fraternal organization of individuals who work in the insurance industry. He is also an active member of the Independent Agents of Wisconsin.
